The ego’s understanding of “you” comes from what it understands you are NOT. The ego
can only make sense of your existence in this world by comparing you to something else and
working out what the differences are. It sees a separation between what “you” are and what
the world around you is. Because of this, it has a hard time understanding what your true
essence is, as it can only see on the external side of things.
This way of understanding the world is called duality. There seems to be a separation
between the “self” and “others”. Duality means your vision and understanding of the world is
based in opposites; hot vs cold, full vs empty,me vs them etc. The ego can only understand
the world in terms of comparison, competition and scarcity (which are the basic
characteristics of a dual model of the world.)
However, we could look at the world from a deeper level. If we take the concept of hot and
cold for example, they are both expressions of “temperature”. (Likewise, full and empty are
expressions of “volume”.) On a surface level, they seem to be each other’s opposite. On a
deeper level however, they are not separate and merely opposing, they are different “ends”
on the same scale, different expressions of the same concept.
In a similar way, consciousness/ Spirit is expressing itself in many different forms in this life
on Earth. You and the people around you are not completely separate, this separation only
exists on a surface level. There is a deeper level that exists in everyone and everything, that
connects us all. If we view the world from this deeper level, we speak of non-duality or that
what some people call oneness (because everything is all one).
To take it one step further; this universe is made up in such a way, that the whole is
contained in every part. We are a unity in diversity (many different expressions of the one
consciousness or flow of energy) ,but also, everything that exists outside of you has a
representation inside of you. Therefore, the DIVINE WORLD exists inside of you as well, not
just outside of you.
The mind cannot understand this, because it thinks in dual concepts.
However, you can feel this deeper dimension, experience it. You can access it by redirecting
your attention inwards, and into the present moment. This is also the dimension where we
receive inspiration, intuitive insights and where we connect to our creativity.
